Reading for Today: Proverb Chapter 14
Gold Nugget
Verse 12-15: There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. 13 Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief. 14 The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above. 15 The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps.
Commentary
Have you ever listened to a recording of yourself and asked, “Is that really what I sound like?” I have been using microphones and hearing recordings of myself for so many years that I know what I sound like to others and I have gotten used to it. I do remember as a child after listening to myself on a tape recorder (for those of you under 30 - a tape recorder was a prehistoric recording device), and thought I sounded horrible. I may actually have and may still sound horrible to others, but I’ve gotten used to it. It seems that most people don’t like what they actually sound like when they are not used to hearing themselves recorded. That being said, we can with confidence tell people that what they hear of their own voice is not actually what they sound like. They are hearing through their own ears or head and it is giving them a false sense of what the truth is. I am not a fan of the television show “American Idol”, but at the start of every season, they put some people that have no idea of how bad they sing on the show. Well, some of them might. We have known people that think they sing well when they actually don’t.
We need to be able to hear what we really sound like and see what we really look like. We don’t dare leave the house without looking in the mirror. We know that we can’t just go on how we feel like we look. The mirror will tell us if we are looking our best or if we are missing the mark. I have known people and am currently doing everything that I can to help someone that is going down a path toward destruction. In this person’s eyes “There is a way that seems right,” but I know that “its end is the way of death.” This person is not seeing a true reflection of what is going on in their life. They have taken a very unique perspective on what is right and wrong that isn’t a true reflection of God’s Word. They have taken their own twist on what is truth and manipulated it to conform to their lifestyle. As it is right now, everything is falling apart for them. We can’t trust our own perspective in life without looking in the mirror of God’s Word anymore than we can leave the house in the morning without looking in the mirror. We must know His Word, accept it as it is and conform to it. It will bring us life, peace, and security. His Word will show us what we really look like and give us the opportunity to adjust ourselves as needed.
Prayer
Lord, help me this day to see me as I really am. Help me to be able to see the truths in your Word and give me the ability to adjust myself accordingly. I want to be a reflection of who you are. Remind me that my natural man has a will of his own that does not regard your laws. Father, help me to read your Word daily and allow it to transform me by the renewing of my mind so I can prove what is your good , acceptable and perfect will.
