Loving Death

Reading for Today: Proverb Chapter 8

Gold Nugget
Verse 36:
But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.

Commentary
God's Word teaches us not to put our own self interest as our highest priority. His Word also teaches us that rejecting and disobeying God will be harmful to ourselves. All of us have a sense of self preservation. This would seem to be all the motivation we need to obey God. Today's gold nugget says, “...he who sins against me wrongs his own soul..." and yet so often we wrong our own soul with disobedience. So why do we keep disobeying God when it not only hurts Him and others, but hurts us as well?

Consider the latter part of today's gold nugget, "...all those who hate me love death...". The bible teaches us in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death. Ezekiel 18:20 says that the soul that sins shall die. The problem isn't that we don't understand the cost of disobedience, it's the delay in paying that fools us. If everyone died immediately from their sin, we would walk more carefully. An intimate walk with God solves this dilemma. Once we understand that our sins hurt God immediately, those who love Him will walk carefully.

Prayer
Lord, I know your wisdom is readily available to me in the bible. Neglecting to find you in your Word is surely rejecting you. As I turn the pages of your Word, please enlighten me with your wisdom.  Amen
