Evil Rejoicing

Reading for Today: Proverb Chapter 17

Gold Nugget

Verse 4-5:  An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue. He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.

Commentary

While he was in office, a rumor had spread that President Obama had outlawed the National Day of Prayer. After doing some research and checking the website for the National Day of Prayer, it turned out to be a rumor. I was getting texts, Facebook updates and E-mails about this new law that didn't exist. I know that in some places in America there are judges trying to outlaw prayer, but the National Day of Prayer is still on. I was a little embarrassed for us as Christians, that we had started spreading a false report. It was as if we were excited about this evil deed. We wanted to share our disgust with each other.

I think sometimes we want our enemies to fail, just to make our point. "I told that lady she better quite drinking and driving and now look at her in jail." We get some joy out of her being punished. We want to see someone suffer for their mistakes. We have (in our flesh) a pleasure in seeing people suffer for their wrongdoing. This is a very ungodly behavior. We should weep because of people's sin and continue to weep when we see people suffer from the effects of sin. "

Consider these verses:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:6 (Love) does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
  • Proverbs 24:17-18 17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; 18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, And He turn away His wrath from him.

Prayer

Lord, I have been guilty of wanting to see people suffer for their wrong doings. I remember the things that you have forgiven me of that I should have paid the price for. I don't want you to abandon your attitude of mercy and grace towards those who need to repent. I want to share your perspective towards sin. I want to be sensitive enough to hurt when I see people sin and hurt when I see people suffer from the result of sin. Forgive me Father, this day and help me to walk in the love as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13:6.

Amen
