Gold Nugget
Verse 33: “The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the just.”
Commentary
Is your
house blessed or cursed? I’ve been in the south all my life, and it’s quite common
to see a “Lord, bless this house” sign hanging in many homes. It may be up
north also, but I wouldn’t know. What I do know is I’ve never seen a “Lord,
curse this house” sign. We all want God’s blessings, but may be clueless on how
we ensure it. Proverbs chapter 3 is one of my favorite chapters in the bible. There
are some powerful and enlightening concepts in this chapter. One thing that we
know in general of God, is His unfailing grace and mercy. We know that grace is
un-merited favor from God, but if there is an “un-merited” favor then what is a
“merited” favor and how do we obtain it? It begins early on in the chapter when
we read “3 Let not mercy and truth
forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of
your heart, 4 and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.”
Here we find a conditional favor... "conditional" on our obedience to His laws and principles.
This is merited favor that can be earned through obedience. This is not the
same as the “un-merited favor” (grace) that saved us, but another favor (God
interacting on our behalf) that stems from us regarding His laws as a priority.
If we want God’s blessings we need to understand how it hinges on our
obedience. Accepting this at more than just face value and allowing it to
change the way we think and reason is the key to experiencing the full blessings
and abundant life that is available to those that obey His commands. This sounds
easy enough, but it takes a commitment to His laws that are found in the
scriptures. Not spending enough time in the Word to be able to know what His commands
are will not be an excuse and will ensure that your house will not be blessed.
Remember today’s “gold nugget”, “The curse of
the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the
just.”
Prayer
Lord, I sure need your favor and blessings. I know what can hinder or open those blessings. I purpose today to commit to the commands in scripture, both to those I know and to those that I am determined to learn. Amen
