Reading for Today: Proverb Chapter 6

Gold Nugget

Verse 23: “For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”

Commentary

If there were no such thing as light, the blind wouldn’t know they were blind. If there were no such thing as sound, the deaf wouldn’t know they were deaf. It’s been said by many, they didn’t know they were poor until they were rich. Our awareness of who we are is conditioned by our surroundings and circumstances. I wouldn’t know I was tall if it weren’t for shorter people. There is a very important learning opportunity in this if we are open to it. Consider what Paul says in Romans. He teaches us that before he became aware of the law, sin was dead. He didn’t know what sin was. Although sin was still damaging and hurtful, he or we were not aware of it. Consider the married man that sleeps with another woman. If it weren’t for the “law” he would be like any animal that wants to be with many mates, but until he learns the “law” of commitment and loyalty, he is free to do as he wishes. Look at many countries were this is not considered immoral. Here in the states and other places whether we know or observe the “law” or not, it will still do damage to our spouse if we do not adhere to this law.

Ignorance of the law only goes so far. So we find that the “law” is good. It reveals to us many things that we would not see without it. Literally revealing things that we would not see, just as a light or lamp reveals to us our surroundings. Again, the law is good. The law is a light and lamp to us. Consider today’s “gold nugget”, “For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.” Also consider the words of Paul from Roman 7. “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law.”

Prayer

Lord, help me to love your laws and allow them to light my path. Your laws and precepts reveal to me what I am, who I am and what I am not. Your laws reveal to me who others are and are not. Your laws reveal to me who you are and how all of us relates and should behave towards each other. Help me to walk in the light of your Word. Amen
