The Company We Keep

Reading for Today: Proverb Chapter 1

Gold Nugget
Verse 15: My son, do not walk in the way with them, keep your foot from their path.”
From the time we were little, our parents have always warned us of the company we keep. It’s a cycle that picks up from one generation to the next. What also seems to carry on from generation to generation is the inability to apply this advice to ourselves. When we were young, we always figured we knew what we were doing when choosing friends and felt confident that no one could influence us to do things we didn’t want to do. Even taking our parents and children out of the picture, the scriptures are continually pressing this issue. Evidently God has a great concern for the company we keep. Many people will not see the need for this lesson today and it’s true that some may not need it as much, but that's because some people don’t have a desire to company with people that don’t have the same values as they do. Just like those people that don’t have any desire to associate with those who don’t share their values, the ungodly hold the exact same position. They are not interested in people that don’t share in their values or lack thereof. When I was in the world, I ran with some pretty ungodly people. I dabbled in everything this world has to offer and found that they will lose interest in you quickly if you don’t partake in their interest. Your very presence will convict them of their sins if you don’t join in with them and you will not be welcome long unless you do. The bible describes this as the Light of God that dwells in you shining on their dark deeds that they do not want exposed. Eventually, you will have to choose to separate yourself from them. Hopefully you will do as today’s “gold nugget” says, My son, do not walk in the way with them, keep your foot from their path.” Our parents knew that this choice would have to be made and they wanted to ensure we weren't put in a situation that we couldn't handle. Our heavenly Father feels the same way and has spoken the same principle in this scripture. All of us, young or old, need to be very careful of the company we keep. “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12)

Lord, although I have been a Christian a while, I know that I still have to be careful of the company I keep. You declare in your Word that we are not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. Help me to develop and maintain relationships with people that have a love for you and your Word. Amen
